You might have read thousands of articles about submitting your blog to various web directories. Also, by now most probably you have come across various list of web directories, top 10 web directories etc. for submitting your blog. Submitting in web directories is a proven way of getting link back as well as traffic. But how which directories to submit as there are many lists as well as thousands of web directories!

I follow few thumb rules:-
1. I check if the web directory is free!, Yes, I am not inclined to pay for listing my site in another website, specially when I know I have original content and Google, Yahoo are already listing it!

2. I check Google Page Rank of the directory as well as Alexa rank. Many people say Google Page Rank does not play much role in search engine ranking of a site or blog, But I am quite sure, when Google finds two sites with equal importance or same niche with similar keywords, they will surely put the site higher in their search results!

3. The directory should have category according to your blog niche! If the web directory matches category of your blog niche, chances are they will have many blogs or sites listed there! So your site too will be listed with similar sites and that will surely help you get visitor as well as keywords.

4. Always use best keywords of your blog in TAG while submitting your blog to a directory! TAG is very important for smart SEO.

5. Your Blog title will be anchor text for link back to site or blog! So choose that smartly! And Google penalizes spam link back heavily.

6. Description of your blog should be short, precise and laden with keywords of your niche. This will give a good impression to casual surfer.

7. I prefer to submit sites manually. I have not used any software to submit yet. Manual submission may be quite a hard work, but it will help you choose quality web directories.

I totally agree that one should submit his blog or site in web directories. It may not give you millions of visitors, but web directories are source of finding sites or blogs similar to yours!
