What is keyword research ?
Here is what I have found out so far, keyword research is finding our keywords searched in search engines, knowing how many times they have been searched over a period. If you know certain keywords which you were stuffing in your posts religiously and than if you find out that that particular keyword is searched miserly 500 times a month, well, quite possible, you have wasted your hard-work! So, keyword research is an activity by which you may choose your right keyword for your niche blog!

How is keyword Research and Earning Online related ?
Once you know which keywords have high volume of search, you may select your keywords! And you will start stuffing those keywords in your blog posts, title, article body. Hopefully, over a period of time, Search engines will start identifying those keywords. Eventually your site or blog will start appearing in first page of search results for those keywords! That will result in good amount of traffic to your blog. More the traffic, more chances of click on your ads!
Well, it may not that easy and straight forward! It may take time, may be a year before your site of blog appear on first page. The worst part is, you may not be alone in identifying those keywords and trying to stuff in articles!

The smart way
Google or any other search engines like old domains! So you need time. Be patient! If your domain is new, you should not try to target those very high volume keywords. Because there will be many webmasters, SEO experts who would be targeting those keywords. I would recommend, one should target keywords searched less than 100,000 a month and target those. Even you could get 1% of it, you may get good traffic to start with.
Over the period of time, when your domain becomes old, you may start targeting higher volume keywords and try to increase your share! Google, Bing and Yahoo will be happy to help!

Write original content. Search engines, specially Google, love original content and unique content. And they are smart enough to find out what is original content and quality content. So do not take easy way out.

So, for earning online, you may have to keep doing keyword research along with writing articles regularly. Keyword research is always an ongoing process. There are many tools available on net for keyword research, some are free, some are paid. I use Google Keyword Tool. It is free and I think it is good enough for me as of now.
