Everybody tries to be on first page of on result of any search engines for desired keywords. That is what all SEO gurus have been telling and achieving for their clients.
But, recently, I have experienced that, position in the search engines result are important, they are are so important that, I have realised rank 11 is better than rank 6th on Google search result!
Ok, How ?
One of blogs was always changing position between 6, 7 or eight position for last few months. But suddenly, it slipped to 11th position few days back. I felt very bad and I thought I must have done something wrong to offend Google God due to which I was punished. I was thinking, most probably, I tried to over-optimize that certain keyword in order to rank little higher to reach top three places!
But, when I checked my Google Analytics, I was surprised to notice that, unique visitors to my blog has gone up. On investigating more, I found that, I got many visitors from the same keyword for which Google God had banished me to 11th position!
I have learned my lesson, 11th position is better than 6,7, 8 or 9th position for the following reasons :-
1. Many people check second page of search results. By default all search engines display 10 results in one page. So, 11th position comes at the TOP in the second page. So, it gets better visibility.
2. Better visibility results in better click through. That explains why I got more visitors from that keyword when y rank slipped to 11 than when it was on 6th on fist page.
3. So, if you can not be in top 3 in search result, pray that you are in 11, 12 positions.

I really like your thinking, but I have found this to be absolutely untrue in all of the sites that we promote. I think this is a case study and one example, do you have any others?

While this is a very interesting post, I think it is the example of one site (blog) and does not apply in general. I think stating that 11th position is better than a 1st page position is maybe a little overzealous. I know that in all of the blogs and sites that we manage, the minute we fall off of page 1 we see an immediate decline in our traffic.

Most probably you are right, but I have experienced that. Also I spoke to few of my friends who also seem to opine 11th position produces more useful visitors and he added the following observation:-
1. They are really looking for something, and they have already clicked for second page which means they are serious searchers anything related to that keyword.

Thank you for liking my thinking. Well, as of now, none of my other blogs has slipped to 11th position from 7 or 8th position.
But I will keep this in mind to record and report.

I can vouch 100% that being 11th is much better than being 8th or 7th. People scan those middle ones pretty guickly and then advance forward. Next pages first one is read again and so on. This has happened to many of my sites over and over again.
