Link building is most time consuming and crucial part of any internet marketing strategy. Mere link building by various well-known tricks like commenting on other blogs, submitting in popular social networking sites, submitting in directory lists may not necessarily convert high SERP for a site. There come quality of links as well as quantity.
Different Search engines treat quantity of incoming links to a site differently. One active member of a popular forum, popular social networking site like Facebook, Orkut etc. may generate large number of incoming links. But are they of any benefit in terms of ranking the site or blog high in search engine results ? How does one control anchor text, which is very crucial for keyword targeting, while generating back links in social networking sites or forums ?
While generating link backs from popular forum like DP ( Digital Point), Facebook, Orkut may bring in odd visitors to your site, and one may get benefit in Alexa ranking too, but how does one gets benefited from those kind of back links as well as visitors ?
Bottom line is, one should target quality back links than large quantity back links. A few quality back links may not only improve SERP, but also bring quality visitor who may convert into clients. As far as I know, Google was very particular about quality of back links. In fact, there was rumour that Google penalises for junk link backs and sudden increase of link backs to a site.
With Google being challenged by Bing recently, the whole game of link building strategy may change. I have started getting many visitors from Bing and percentage of visitors from Google is going down day by day. I am actually very happy about this as now I can think beyond Google for visitors to my site. Previously, my whole SEO effort was to satisfy whim and fancies of Google God! Thankfully, it is no more.
There is one more positive site about choosing quality over quantity. Quality link backs increase visitor satisfaction too. If a blog provides related and relevant links to the topic it writes about, the visitor gets more information on same topic with different perspective. This may in turn increase reputation of the blog or website.
